John J. Monaghan

Founder, Deceased

John "Jack" Monaghan, our founder, was born in West Philadelphia on May 22, 1948. He was a graduate of St. Laurence School in Upper Darby and Monsignor Bonner High School in Drexel Hill. He grew up assisting his grandfather, Joseph J. Stutz, Sr., in the family funeral business in Centralia, PA, which was later moved to Mt. Carmel, PA during the coal mine fires.

After graduating from Villanova University and serving a tour in Vietnam with the U.S. Navy, Jack attended American Academy McAllister Institute of Funeral Service in New York, NY and attained his Funeral Director license in 1973.

Jack purchased Long Funeral Home in Red Hill, PA from Mr. James Long in 1997. He eventually established Monaghan Funeral Home, Inc. and changed the funeral home's name in 1998. In 2007 Jack purchased The Oliver H. Bair Co., which is an "old name" in funeral service throughout the Philadelphia community.

Growing up in a family business and losing his wife, Kathy, after a long battle with breast cancer gave Jack a great deal of insight as to what it takes to express empathy toward a grieving family. His empathy and professionalism were evident throughout his 47 years of funeral service.

Sadly, Jack passed away unexpectedly on November 25, 2020. His daughter, Bridget Monaghan Wible, FD, proudly purchased Monaghan Funeral Home, Inc. from his estate in January 2023.
